Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a low density, open cell lightweight, soft foam predominantly used in the furniture industry. PU foams, as they are commonly known, have been adapted in applications requiring cushioning, gap/dust sealing and anti-vibration/noise reduction.

Depending on its thickness and density, PU foam is an excellent acoustic and thermal conductive material, due to its cell structure. It can also be supplied in a variety of specialist grades offering conductive, static, dissipative and flame-retardant material solutions.

Polyurethane foam complies with Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 S.I. No 1324 Schedule 1 Part 1 (AMD 1989) (AMD 1993). This material is suitable for applications requiring FMVSS302.

Rolls are manufactured 1mtr wide x 10mtrs long and are stocked in 3mm, 4mm, 6mm & 12mm Thicknesses.

Overview:

  • Good sealing properties (air, dust and water migration)

  • Extremely lightweight

  • Good UV & ozone resistance

  • Good thermal insulation

  • Good acoustic properties

Polyurethane Foam Gaskets

Using our in-house manufacturing facilities, CB Frost can produce Polyurethane foam gaskets in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your requirements, be it a simple rectangular, square, or circular design, or a much more complex shape, with holes and cut-outs, radius, and angled corners.

We can produce Polyurethane foam gaskets in thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 12mm thick, all of which are manufactured on our overhead or swing arm presses. If you require thicker gaskets, we can source thicker grades of Polyurethane foam and offer a water jet cut solution to provide a clean, flat edge that gives the required fit.

We cater to supplying both custom one offs and full volume production Polyurethane foam gaskets. For large volume production requirements, we can supply Polyurethane foam gaskets kiss-cut on rolls, providing the size and shape of your gasket requirements allow for this.

We can supply all Polyurethane foam gaskets as plain or adhesive backed and have a range of adhesive tapes that can be applied to Polyurethane foam to suit your requirements.

Polyurethane Foam Washers

Using our extensive in-house manufacturing facilities, CB Frost can supply all sizes of Polyurethane foam washers. We ensure Polyurethane foam is kept in stock as a roll material in order to achieve quick turnaround times.

Polyurethane foam washers can be produced in thicknesses ranging between 3mm and 12mm – we cut washers to size using our overhead or swing arm presses. If you require thicker washers, we can source thicker grades of Polyurethane foam and offer a water jet cut solution to provide a clean, flat edge that gives the required fit.

We can supply Polyurethane foam washers as plain or adhesive backed and have a range of adhesive tapes that can be applied to Polyurethane foam to suit your requirements.

We cater for custom one-off requirements, through to full volume production. For larger volume requirements, we can supply washers as individually cut washers or kiss-cut and supplied on rolls.

Polyurethane Foam Strip

At CB Frost, we cut all Polyurethane foam strip from roll stock material to ensure a fast turnaround.

Providing you require a minimum width of 4mm, we can cut Polyurethane foam strips in house to your specific width requirements.

We can supply Polyurethane foam strip as plain or adhesive backed and have a range of adhesive tapes that can be applied to Polyurethane foam to suit your requirements.

Polyurethane Foam Sheeting

CB Frost can provide Polyurethane foam as either plain or adhesive backed sheeting, or converted into strips, gaskets, or washers, using our in-house manufacturing facilities.

Polyurethane foam sheeting can be supplied in a range of thicknesses and sheet sizes. In roll form, Polyurethane foam can be supplied between 3mm to 12mm thick. In sheet form, Polyurethane foam can be supplied up to 110mm thick. Polyurethane foam sheet material can be supplied from 2m long x 1m wide. Roll material can be supplied from 10m long x 1m wide, dependent on stock.

We can supply Polyurethane foam sheeting as plain or adhesive backed and have a range of adhesive tapes that can be applied to Polyurethane foam to suit your requirements.

The History Of Polyurethane

Mustard Gas Resistance

Polyurethanes can be found in a number of forms including liquid coatings and paints, tough elastomers such as roller blade wheels, rigid insulation, soft flexible foam, elastic fiber or as an integral skin.

The origin of polyurethane dates back to the beginning of World War II, when it was first developed as a replacement for rubber. The versatility of this new organic polymer and its ability to substitute for scarce materials spurred numerous applications. During World War II, polyurethane coatings were used for the impregnation of paper and the manufacture of mustard gas resistant garments, high-gloss airplane finishes and chemical and corrosion-resistant coatings to protect metal, wood and masonry.

Comfortable Cushioning

By the end of the war, polyurethane coatings were being manufactured and used on an industrial scale and could be custom formulated for specific applications. By the mid-50’s, polyurethanes could be found in coatings and adhesives, elastomers and rigid foams. It was not until the late-50’s that comfortable cushioning flexible foams were commercially available. With the development of a low-cost polyether polyol, flexible foams could now be utilised for the upholstery and automotive applications we know today.

Today, polyurethanes can be found in virtually everything we touch—desks, chairs, cars, clothes, footwear, appliances, beds as well as the insulation in our walls and roof and moldings on our homes.
