An Introduction to CB Frost’s Foam Rubber

At CB Frost, as well as providing a number of foam materials in sheet and strip form, we can also manufacture a multitude of products in house, including gaskets, washers and fabrications. However, as well as common industrial uses of foam materials, these highly versatile materials are used in a wide range of applications, products and services that the average person comes across on a daily basis including trains, packaging, insulation, toys, upholstery and sporting protective gear.

What is Foam Rubber?

Foam rubber can refer to a wide variety of foam types. For example, both polyethylene and polyurethane foams are types of foam rubber. Although often shortened, the word foam doesn’t refer to a singular product. It refers to the cellular structure. That’s why foam can be found in many different forms.

Why use Foam Rubber?

Foam profiles are fabricated into finished gaskets that are used for shock absorption and provide good compression and recovery. In addition, sponge foam also supports custom fabrication; as well as being used in food and medical industries. For example, open-cell foams are used in prosphetic devices, medical sponges, electrodiogram pads, medical filters and sterilization bags.

Advantages of Foam Rubber

Foam rubber has many useful properties including its weight, buoyancy, compressibility, comfort and insulation.

Disadvantages of Foam Rubber?

Foam rubber has some disadvantages including fabrication and processing time in production and ability to withstand tearing. These disadvantages mean that other forms of rubber have to be utilised if there is a risk of tearing.

CB Frost are a UK preferred convertor of the BISCO® range of silicone-based foams and have a relationship with Rogers Corporation extending over 30 years.

HT800 Silicone foam is a medium cellular foam material with excellent compression set, memory, and low stress relaxation properties. Due to its compression set, HT800 commonly reduces the maintenance costs involved with gasket failure.

Due to its excellent resistance to Ultraviolet light and ozone, combined with a considerable low and high temperature range, HT800 Silicone foam is commonly used to reduce shock, isolate vibration and provide protection against wind driven rain and fire in various outdoor communications, electronics and lighting enclosures.

HT800 Silicone foam is Fire Safe – approved to EN45545, BS6853 Cat 1A, UL94 approved to V-0 and HF-1. The material is also approved and utilised by TFL (Transport for London).

Typical rail applications include anti-rattle seals, gap fillers, enclosure seals, HVAC, and access panel seals.

BF1000 Silicone foam is soft cellular Silicone foam material and is supplied in white as standard. BF1000 Silicone foam is an ideal choice for sealing applications due to its compressibility, softness, and durability. It has excellent memory and low stress relaxation, and the softness of the material means that less force is needed to seal.

Due to its excellent resistance to UV light and ozone, combined with an excellent low and high temperature range, BF1000 Silicone is commonly used for outdoor applications, such as sealing enclosures to protect from heat and the elements, as well protecting electronics from shock and providing cushioning and vibration for a wide variety of applications.

BF1000 Silicone foam is Fire Safe – approved to EN45545, BS6853 and UL94 approved to V-0 and HF-1.

Typical rail applications include anti-rattle seals, gap fillers, enclosure seals, HVAC, and access panel seals.

BF2000 Silicone foam is an ultra-soft and highly compressible foam material with excellent memory and low stress relaxation properties.

Due to its high compressibility, BF2000 Silicone foam can conform to various width gaps, making it ideal for transportation, industrial and electronic applications where low closure force and dust sealing are critical.

Further beneficial properties of BF200 Silicone foam are its excellent resistance to Ultraviolet light and ozone, as well as effective resistance to extreme temperatures, both low and high. These characteristics mean that BF2000 is well suited for outdoor applications.

BF2000 Silicone foam is Fire Safe – approved to EN45545, BS6853 and UL94 approved to V-0 and HF-1.

Polyurethane is low density open cell foam that is used in a variety of applications, for packaging (cushioning), vibration dampening and sealing applications.

Depending on its thickness and density, Polyurethane is an excellent acoustic and thermal conductive material, due to its cell structure. It can also be supplied in a variety of specialist grades offering conductive, static dissipative and flame-retardant material solutions.

Armaflex® Rail SD & SD-C foam is the world’s first flexible closed cell insulation to meet EN45545-2 fire protection requirements.

It is the leading and most innovative closed cell thermal insulation available to the railway industry worldwide and comes complete with a built-in vapour barrier reducing the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI). Armaflex® Rail SD & SD-C has been developed to produce extremely low smoke density and reduce the risk of mold and mildew contributing to an improved indoor air quality.

Applications include insulation/protection for air-conditioning and refrigeration air ducts and pipes (including elbows, fittings, flanges etc.) to prevent condensation.

Armaflex® Rail foam comes in two grades; either standard SD or SD-C which is the standard SD material but with a silver metallic look coating.

Armaflex® Rail ZH & ZH-C halogen free foam is the world’s first flexible closed cell insulation to meet EN45545-2 fire protection requirements.

It is the leading and most innovative closed cell thermal insulation available to the railway industry worldwide and comes complete with a built-in vapour barrier reducing the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI). Armaflex® Rail ZH & ZH-C has been developed to produce extremely low smoke density and reduce the risk of mold and mildew contributing to an improved indoor air quality.

Applications include insulation/protection for air-conditioning and refrigeration air ducts and pipes (including elbows, fittings, flanges etc.) to prevent condensation.

Armaflex® Rail foam comes in two grades; either standard ZH or ZH-C which is the standard ZH material but with a silver metallic look coating.

It has minimal smoke and toxic emissions in the event of fire as it is manufactured free from halogen based flame retarders.

HT Armaflex is an EPDM based insulation foam that can be used at higher temperatures for industrial applications.

Its closed cell structure acts as an effective vapour barrier and its low thermal conductivity and high degree temperature range (150°C) makes the material suitable for use in range of applications, see below. Just like the rest of the Armacell range HT EPDM is tested to BS476 part 7 and complies with Class 1.

Typical applications include pipework, hot gas lines and motor vehicles.

Class O is a lightweight, closed cell flexible insulation foam for reliable and continuous condensation control.

It has a unique micro-cell structure (Armacell grade) that makes the foam easy to install with no additional vapour barrier requirements. This material is tested to BS476 part 7 and achieves results better than class 1.

A combination of low thermal conductivity and high resistance to water vapour prevents long term energy loss, moisture ingress and reduces the risk of corrosion under insulation.

The built in Microban protection and excellent fire performance make Class O suitable for use in public buildings and process industries.

Class O is dust, fibre, and formaldehyde free.

Typical applications include pipework, air conditioning ductwork, hot and cold-water services, and insulation/protection against condensation.
